Jared Young of Tampa Bay Aquatics had standout meets at the under-12 and under-10 age groups at the Florida Swimming Junior Olympic Championships at the Long Center in Clearwater last weekend.
Young won all six events he entered, giving him 120 points individually as TBAY finished fifth in the boys under-10 team competition and third overall.
Young entered the meet with the fastest seeding times in all six of his events, but due to his age, TBAY coach Kelley Allen was nervous about how his young swimmer would handle the competition.
He need not have worried. Young knocked almost 11 seconds off his personal best in his first event, winning the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:39.99, and went on to further success.
"There's a lot of pressure walking into that pool on the day of the first swim," Allen said. "Just going in, is he going to have it together because he's a 10-year-old boy, and you never know what a 10-year-old boy's going to do. But he swam like a champ all weekend, and it was exciting to watch."
Young followed up his win in the 500 free with wins in the 50 free (27.57), 100 free (59.55), 200 free (2:09.23), 100 individual medley (1:09.08) and 200 individual medley (2:26.14).
